How to get your first B2B customers with outbound

Before you have referrals, a brand or a sales team, outbound is the most direct way to put your offer in front of the people who can buy it. Here is the plan we run for every SLSBMB AI buyer, written so you can also run it yourself.

1. Decide who to reach — as audiences, not one ICP

"Mid-size SaaS companies" is not an audience. An audience is a group of people in the same situation who would care about the same message: founders of vertical software companies still doing sales themselves, or operations leads at regional logistics firms. Write down three to ten such audiences, why each would care, and roughly how many people are in each. Expect to be wrong about some of them; the replies will tell you which.

With SLSBMB AI: the free interview turns your website into a brief, and the AI Outreach Playbook researches every audience worth reaching, with evidence and a size estimate. Our own playbook has 31 audiences.

2. Find the people, not just the companies

For each audience, pair a description of the company with the titles of the people who own the problem: "regional third-party logistics provider" with "Head of Operations", "COO". Use several title variants; people describe the same job differently. Verify every email before you send.

With SLSBMB AI: AI Contacts turns one sentence into filters across 536M+ professionals, shows real matches free, and charges $0.10 per verified business email found.

3. Write one short sequence per audience

An opener that names the recipient's situation and makes one clear offer, then four short follow-ups. Plain text, specific, honest, one small ask. Most replies come after the first email, so the follow-ups matter. See how a sequence works.

4. Protect your company domain

Never send cold email from the domain your customers and team use. Send from separate, authenticated domains, warm new inboxes for about three weeks, and keep each inbox to a modest daily volume. See the deliverability guide.

With SLSBMB AI: the Sending Engine registers, authenticates and warms the domains and inboxes for you, from $800 a month for two domains and eight inboxes.

5. Send at a human pace, and read every reply

Spread sends across the working day. Answer interested people quickly; stop following up with anyone who replies or opts out. Track replies per audience — that is where the learning is.

6. Learn and repeat

After a full sequence cycle, compare audiences: which replied, which said "not now", which were silent. Rewrite the weak ones, add new audiences, drop the ones that don't fit. Outbound improves by iteration, not by one perfect campaign.

What it costs and how long it takes

Step Do it yourself With SLSBMB AI
Audiences and research Days of your time Free interview, then a $500 playbook in a couple of hours
Contacts A data tool subscription, or lists you build $0.10 per verified email, or included in the Sending Engine
Infrastructure and warmup Domains, mailboxes, a sending tool, about 21 days of warmup Included in the Sending Engine, from $800 a month
First emails After warmup, around week four Around day 22 after payment
Replies at full level From about month three From about month three

Outbound is not instant. Plan for about three weeks before the first emails and two to three months before replies reach their full level, and treat any vendor that promises a fixed number of meetings with care.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to get the first B2B customers?

For most founders without a network or brand, direct outreach to well-researched audiences is the most controllable channel: you choose who hears from you. Expect about three weeks of setup before the first emails and a few months of iteration.

Do I need a sales team to do outbound?

No. A founder can run outbound with good research, a short sequence per audience and protected infrastructure, or buy those parts from a service such as SLSBMB AI and spend their own time only on the people who reply.

How many emails should I send to get customers?

It depends on the audience and the offer. For planning, SLSBMB assumes about 2% of campaign emails get a reply at full capacity; your real number will differ, so measure it per audience.
